Chapter 3: The Ceremony of Exposure

The ballroom lights felt harsher now.
As if they had been adjusted to reveal rather than beautify.
Guests whispered as Amy walked back down the aisle alone, still in her wedding gown, veil dragging like a question that refused to end.
No music played.
Linda, the coordinator, stood frozen near the altar, headset abandoned on her shoulder like a broken halo.
Amy stepped onto the platform.
Three hundred faces turned toward her.
And behind her, the Bennett family entered through the side doors with Maverick and Penelope between them.
A ripple moved through the crowd.
Confusion first.
Then recognition.
Then the beginning of understanding no one wanted to reach.
Amy raised her hand.
Not for silence.
For truth.
“I was supposed to get married today,” she said.
Her voice did not shake.
“It seems I still am.”
Murmurs rose instantly, but she continued.
“I invited you here for a wedding,” she said. “Instead, you’ll witness a decision.”
Maverick stepped forward.
“Amy, please—don’t do this in front of everyone.”
She turned to him slowly.
“Why?” she asked. “That’s where you did it.”
The ballroom went dead quiet.
Even the chandeliers seemed to hold their light more carefully.
Penelope began crying again, but no one looked at her anymore.
Because something else had arrived.
Not scandal.
Not rumor.
Truth, fully formed.
Amy reached into the folds of her dress and removed a folded document.
The prenup.
Signed.
Witnessed.
Legally binding.
And underneath it—another page.
One no one had seen before.
A clause added quietly months ago.
In case of infidelity, all shared assets revert entirely to her.
Maverick’s father whispered, “What is that?”
May you like
Amy looked up.
“A consequence,” she said.
