Chapter 12 - CAMILLA’S ESCAPE

Camilla had escaped police custody during transport to a medical examination.

A vehicle struck the convoy near Nice.

Masked men removed her within ninety seconds.

Investigators believed Laurent arranged the rescue.

Laurent remained in custody.

Roman had arranged it instead.

He needed Camilla because she knew the final beneficiary protocol.

He also needed a pilot.

Camilla had trained to fly helicopters before meeting Victor.

She rarely discussed it.

Victor remembered her claiming she abandoned aviation after a frightening lesson.

Another lie.

The helicopter crossed toward the Italian coast.

Police aircraft followed but maintained distance because Marcel remained hostage.

Roman contacted Victor through the contingency system.

“You survived the pier.”

Victor recognized the voice from Jonathan’s house.

“You underestimated me.”

“No.”

“I underestimated Mateo Ruiz.”

Victor looked at Mateo.

Roman knew who saved him.

That meant someone had watched the rescue beneath the water.

The hidden diver was not the only person near the marina.

“What do you want?” Victor asked.

“The ninety million.”

“You cannot access it.”

“You can.”

“The account is frozen.”

“You designed a physical override.”

Victor had created one emergency override stored inside the Moreau family vault.

Only he knew the sequence.

Roman somehow knew it existed.

“Release Marcel,” Victor said.

“My father abandoned me before you were born.”

“He spent years buying silence about my existence.”

“Do you think I crossed half the world to save him?”

“Then why keep him alive?”

“Because he knows where the original Moreau bearer bonds are hidden.”

The bonds were rumored to be worth more than the contingency fund.

Victor believed they were a family myth.

Marcel had apparently hidden them before disappearing.

Roman wanted both fortunes.

Camilla’s voice entered the call.

“Victor.”

He remained silent.

“You need to listen to him.”

“Why?”

“Because he will kill your father.”

“You pushed me into the sea.”

“You were supposed to die quickly.”

The coldness of the sentence shocked even Roman.

Camilla continued.

“Roman will kill all of us if he does not receive the money.”

“You chose to work with him.”

“I chose Laurent.”

“Your mother chose Roman.”

Victor looked toward the tactical team.

Camilla was telling him that Isabelle had connected the conspiracy to Roman.

Isabelle may have recruited Camilla years earlier.

Then Roman took control of the plan.

“Where are you going?” Victor asked.

Camilla hesitated.

Roman took the phone.

“You already know.”

The call ended.

Victor reviewed the aircraft’s direction.

It was not heading toward Italy.

It was turning north toward Monaco.

Sofia understood.

“The family vault.”

Moreau Maritime’s original headquarters sat above Monaco Harbor.

The building contained a private underground vault created by Marcel.

Roman planned to use Victor, Marcel and the contingency override in one location.

Detective Fournier ordered units to secure the headquarters.

Victor contacted Elena.

“Remove everyone from the building.”

“The board is still meeting.”

“Evacuate them now.”

“The acting chairman refuses.”

“Who is acting chairman?”

Elena looked at another screen.

“Your mother.”

Isabelle had used the crisis to seize temporary company control.

She was inside the headquarters.

Either she did not know Roman was coming.

Or she was waiting for him.

Victor left Île Noire by police vessel.

As Monaco appeared in the distance, the Moreau headquarters lights went dark.

Every security door locked simultaneously.

Roman had taken control before landing.
