That afternoon, Ethan returned to the school archives.
Maya followed him silently.
Inside the locked records room, he found it.
A sealed envelope with his name.
Marked: DO NOT OPEN UNTIL MEMORY RETURN.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside were hospital photos.
News clippings.
And a final image—
Him, as a child, unconscious in Maya’s arms after a collapse during the shelter fire.
Underneath, a report:
“Unknown girl rescued him before emergency responders arrived. Identity unverified. Subject disappeared afterward.”
Ethan staggered back.
“You saved me…” he whispered.
Maya nodded once.
But her eyes weren’t relieved.
They were afraid.
“Not everything in that file is the truth,” she said.
“What do you mean?”
Before she could answer—
The door behind them opened.
A man in a black suit stepped in.
Principal Carter.
And he wasn’t alone.
He looked at Maya first.
