Chapter 19 - What My Father Hid

Victor Shaw was charged first.
Nathan followed.
Andrew signed a cooperation agreement.
Mom refused every plea offer.
Dad eventually agreed to testify.
But Mom’s final words on the hotel balcony would not leave me alone.
She knew what your father had done before you were born.
Three weeks later, Dad asked to see me.
He was under house arrest while prosecutors decided how many charges he would face.
I met him with Mercer present.
Dad looked exhausted.
“Your mother told you.”
“She hinted.”
He nodded slowly.
“What did you do?”
He stared at his hands.
“I am not your biological father.”
For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.
“What?”
“Your mother was pregnant when we met.”
I stared at him.
“Did Grandma know?”
“Eventually.”
“Who is my father?”
Dad looked toward Mercer.
Then back at me.
“Samuel Pierce.”
Everything inside me stopped.
The missing attorney.
Grandma’s trustee.
The man whose abandoned vehicle had contained my letter.
“No.”
Dad closed his eyes.
“Samuel and Margaret had an affair.”
“When?”
“Before our marriage.”
“Why did you raise me?”
“Because I loved your mother.”
“That is not an answer.”
“Because I believed I could love you too.”
I swallowed hard.
“Could?”
He looked ashamed.
“You reminded Margaret of Samuel.”
“And she hated me for it.”
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
Cruel.
Perfectly logical.
My entire childhood rearranged itself.
Mom’s resentment.
Grandma protecting me.
Dad’s distance.
The constant insistence that Lily deserved more because she “needed family support.”
I had spent decades trying to earn a place that had been complicated before I ever took my first breath.
“Did Samuel know?”
“Not at first.”
“Later?”
“Yes.”
“Did he try to contact me?”
Dad nodded.
My chest tightened.
“What did you do?”
“I stopped him.”
“How?”
“I threatened to expose what happened with the trust.”
“You used your crimes to keep my father away from me?”
Dad looked down.
“I told myself I was protecting the family.”
I laughed bitterly.
“That phrase has destroyed almost everything in my life.”
Mercer leaned forward.
“Where is Samuel Pierce?”
Dad shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“But Margaret does?”
“I think Victor does.”
Victor was already in federal custody.
That evening, Mercer interrogated him again.
Two hours later, he called me.
“Claire.”
“You found something.”
“Yes.”
“Samuel?”
“Victor says Nathan took him.”
“Where?”
“He gave us a location.”
My heart pounded.
“Is he alive?”
“We don’t know.”
The location was an abandoned estate north of the city.
Agents entered shortly after midnight.
They found ropes.
Blood.
A destroyed phone.
And Samuel Pierce’s coat.
But no Samuel.
Then one agent discovered a hidden basement room.
Inside was a recent photograph of me.
Beside it was a newspaper clipping from Lily’s wedding.
And written across the wall were five words.
