Chapter 15 - Evelyn's Game

Evelyn Porter disappeared from her assisted-living facility the same morning Lucas called.

Security footage showed her walking without assistance toward a waiting SUV.

No confusion.

No frailty.

No fear.

Everything we had seen in Savannah had been performance.

Police located Gloria and Lucas inside a rented farmhouse near Roanoke.

Evelyn was gone by the time officers arrived.

Lucas was safe.

That was all I cared about in that moment.

I met him at a child advocacy center.

He sat on a couch holding a toy dinosaur.

He had Sophie's eyes.

My chin.

Charles's dark hair from younger photographs.

When he looked at me, I had to remind myself not to overwhelm him.

I crouched several feet away.

“Hi, Lucas.”

“Hi.”

“I'm Claire.”

“I know.”

He squeezed the dinosaur.

“Gloria said you didn't know about me.”

“No.”

“That wasn't your fault.”

“No.”

I almost cried.

He was five and already reassuring adults.

I sat beside him.

“Can I tell you something?”

He nodded.

“You have a sister.”

His eyes widened.

“Really?”

“Her name is Sophie.”

“Is she five?”

“Yes.”

“Does she like dinosaurs?”

“She prefers unicorns.”

He looked disappointed.

Then he thought about it.

“That's okay.”

I laughed through tears.

That evening, Sophie met Lucas.

They stared at one another.

Sophie said, “You look like Grandpa.”

Lucas said, “You look like me.”

Then they started playing.

Children accepted in ten minutes what adults had spent decades destroying.

Gloria was arrested for falsifying guardianship documents but immediately began cooperating.

Her story revealed the next layer.

She had not raised Lucas from birth.

For the first three years, he lived with a paid surrogate named Michelle Hale.

Michelle believed the embryo came from an anonymous couple who had surrendered parental rights.

When she began asking questions, Margaret paid her to leave the country.

Gloria became guardian.

She grew attached to Lucas.

When Margaret ordered her to transfer him to another location, Gloria finally fled.

“What location?”

Gloria looked terrified.

“Evelyn's.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn is the one Margaret answers to.”

Everything we believed inverted again.

We thought Margaret had orchestrated the family obsession.

She had.

But she inherited it from her mother.

Evelyn had been Edward's discarded mistress.

Edward abandoned her.

Denied Margaret.

Paid them to disappear.

Evelyn spent decades teaching Margaret that the Whitmores had stolen their rightful life.

The revenge began with her.

Evelyn encouraged Margaret to pursue Charles.

Evelyn helped arrange the switched babies.

Evelyn introduced Margaret to Nathan.

Evelyn preserved Edward's secrets.

And Evelyn believed Lucas was the final correction.

A male child carrying the bloodline who could legally seize a major trust.

“She wants custody?”

I asked.

Gloria shook her head.

“She wants control.”

“Through who?”

“Evan.”

My stomach dropped.

Evan was legally my husband.

Potentially still legally Lucas's presumed father depending on how courts interpreted the fertility consent.

If Evan gained custody, Margaret and Evelyn could influence the assets through him.

That required separating me from both children.

The false paternity test had been phase one.

Destroy my marriage.

Discredit me.

Take Sophie.

Then reveal Lucas when convenient.

Margaret had not expected Sophie to discover the photograph.

The five-year-old child chained to a porch had accidentally collapsed a forty-year conspiracy.

That night, I visited Evan at his hotel.

He looked at Lucas's photograph for a long time.

“I didn't know.”

“I believe you.”

It was the first time I had said that in days.

He nodded.

“Thank you.”

“That doesn't fix what you did.”

“I know.”

“You believed I cheated.”

“I know.”

“You let your mother mistreat Sophie.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

“But someone is trying to use you.”

He looked up.

“Who?”

“Evelyn.”

I explained.

When I finished, Evan opened the hotel safe.

He removed a folder.

“I think she already tried.”

Inside was a trust document mailed anonymously three weeks earlier.

It named Evan temporary trustee for an unidentified minor male heir.

He had ignored it because he thought it was financial spam.

The document contained a handwritten note.

When Claire is gone, the boy is yours.

The handwriting was Evelyn's.

Before I could speak, Evan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

An elderly woman said:

“Don't disappoint me like your mother did.”

Evan put the call on speaker.

Evelyn continued.

“Bring both children to the Whitmore estate tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because it's time they meet the man who started all of this.”

I grabbed the phone.

“Edward is dead.”

Evelyn laughed.

May you like

“No, Claire.”

“Edward is waiting for you.”
