Chapter 5: What Family Means

Sirens filled the streets outside the Whitmore Hotel.
Red and blue light spilled through the glass walls.
Police arrived quickly after that.
Too quickly for excuses.
Too late for denial.
Preston was handcuffed without resistance, his expensive tuxedo suddenly meaningless.
My father tried to speak to the officers.
But they didn’t listen.
Not anymore.
My mother stood frozen as they read the charges.
Assault.
Child endangerment.
False accusation fabrication.
And attempted cover-up.
She finally turned to me, her voice breaking for the first time.
“Evelyn… please… he’s your brother.”
I looked at her for a long moment.
Then I said quietly:
“He stopped being my family when he raised his hand to my child.”
Sophie was taken into the ambulance.
Before the doors closed, she reached for me.
And I held her hand until I couldn’t anymore.
Months later, the court case made headlines.
“The Golden Son Trial.”
But I never read them.
Because for the first time in my life, I didn’t need their version of truth.

The CCTV had already spoken.
And it never lied.
