CHAPTER 3 — The Missing Minute

The hotel’s security room was cold.

Too clean. Too quiet for what it was about to show.

On the monitor: the ballroom feed.

Two hundred guests.

Crystal lights.

Sophie sitting peacefully at the table.

Then Preston walking in.

Evelyn leaned forward, breath held.

The footage advanced.

Preston approached the head table… then paused.

Not randomly.

Deliberately.

He looked around.

Then, very clearly, he reached into his own jacket.

And dropped something small into Sophie’s denim pocket while pretending to greet a waiter.

Evelyn’s hand tightened.

“Oh my God…”

The security officer froze. “That’s… that’s not standard behavior.”

Back in the ballroom, Preston suddenly shouted:

“Turn it off!”

May you like

But it was too late.

The truth had already been seen.
