CHAPTER 12: THE PRESS CONFERENCE

The press conference was held in the Sterling Global headquarters.

Every major network attended.

Reporters filled the auditorium while thousands more watched online.

Alexander walked onto the stage alone.

Behind him, a large screen displayed no company logo.

Only a photograph of Sophia holding the bag of discarded bread.

“My name is Alexander Sterling,” he began. “Three years ago, my wife and daughter disappeared from my life.”

Cameras flashed.

“I was told Lauren abandoned our marriage. I was told she refused contact. I was told the money I sent each month was supporting our daughter.”

He paused.

“Every one of those claims was false.”

Alexander explained the forged letters, fraudulent transfers, threats, and surveillance.

He did not hide his own failure.

“I believed the lies because they came from people I trusted. But trust does not excuse blindness. I should have searched for my daughter. I should have questioned why every path back to my family was closed.”

He played a portion of Lauren’s recording.

Victoria’s voice filled the auditorium.

Sign the documents, Lauren. Keep the child and disappear, or Alexander will take her from you forever.

The room erupted.

Alexander raised one hand.

“There are false medical records circulating about my wife. Independent physicians have confirmed they were fabricated. Lauren did not neglect Sophia. She sacrificed everything to protect her.”

The screen changed.

Bank records revealed where the five thousand dollars had gone each month.

Payments to investigators.

Payments to corrupt officials.

Payments to Nathan Cole.

Payments to Victoria Sterling.

“The money intended to feed and shelter my daughter funded the operation that kept us apart.”

Reporters shouted questions.

Alexander continued.

“Effective today, Victoria Sterling is permanently removed from all Sterling companies. Every asset connected to the fraud has been frozen.”

The next image showed Edward’s trust.

“My daughter is the lawful beneficiary of thirty-eight percent of the Sterling family shares.”

Shock spread through the room.

“Those shares will not be used to enrich another generation of Sterlings. A portion of the trust’s annual earnings will establish the Sophia Foundation.”

Alexander described its purpose: housing assistance, legal representation, and medical care for parents and children escaping financial abuse.

“The foundation’s first investment will purchase and renovate the building where Lauren and Sophia were forced to live.”

He looked into the cameras.

“No child should search through garbage while money intended for her care is stolen by people hiding behind wealth and respectability.”

When the conference ended, public opinion changed within minutes.

The false medical reports were exposed.

Former Sterling employees began contacting investigators.

Hotel workers shared accounts of Victoria’s behavior.

Families who had been threatened into silence came forward.

But the most important response came from the hospital.

Lauren watched the entire conference from her bed.

When Alexander returned, she was standing by the window with Sophia beside her.

“You told them everything,” Lauren said.

“I should have done it years ago.”

Sophia ran to him.

“Are we famous now?”

Alexander smiled for the first time in days.

“I’m afraid so.”

“Does that mean we can get pizza?”

Lauren laughed.

The sound was weak, but real.

Alexander looked at them both.

“Yes,” he said. “It definitely means we can get pizza.”

For a few minutes, they were not billionaires, victims, or headlines.

They were simply a family eating together in a hospital room.

But one final decision remained.

And only Lauren could make it.
