Chapter 11 - MARK FINALLY STOPPED DEFENDING HER

Mark drove to Mom’s house alone.
I told him not to.
He went anyway.
He returned three hours later looking ten years older.
Emily opened the door.
He walked inside and sat at the kitchen table.
“What happened?”
I asked.
He laughed bitterly.
“She admitted the cabin.”
My chest tightened.
“Everything?”
“Enough.”
“She said Dad was irresponsible to leave us property when we were too young.”
“We were adults.”
“I know.”
“She said she borrowed against it because family money should help family.”
“Did she admit forging your signature?”
Mark stared at the table.
“She said she did what she had to do.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“And Grandma Patricia’s house?”
Mark nodded.
“She said Grandma wanted her to have it.”
“Was there a will?”
“She wouldn’t show me anything.”
“What about Emily?”
His expression changed.
“I asked why she hit her.”
“And?”
“She said Emily challenged her in front of everyone.”
My jaw tightened.
“That’s not an answer.”
“I know.”
Mark looked up.
“For the first time, I told her that.”
He swallowed.
“She asked whether I was choosing Vanessa over her too.”
I almost laughed at how predictable it was.
“What did you say?”
“I said I was choosing my marriage.”
Then Mark started crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
He covered his face with both hands.
“I have spent fifteen years letting her insult my wife.”
Vanessa was not innocent.
But neither had she created the entire system.
Mom had rewarded Vanessa when she attacked Emily.
Then mocked Vanessa by praising Emily.
She kept everyone hungry enough for approval that no one noticed she was serving poison.
Mark lowered his hands.
“She asked me to leave.”
Emily gave a sad smile.
“Welcome to the club.”
He laughed despite himself.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from Mom.
Don’t bother coming back until you remember who raised you.
Mark read it.
Then he deleted it.
That small movement felt enormous.
The next week, Mark joined the legal action regarding the cabin.
Together, we requested a full accounting of the trust.
Mom received notice on Thursday.
On Friday, she changed the locks at the cabin.
On Saturday, she drove there.
And on Sunday morning, a neighbor called Mark.
May you like
Smoke was coming from behind the property.
Mom was burning boxes of old documents in a metal barrel.
