CHAPTER 2: THE MOMENT EVERYTHING BROKE

The kitchen went silent after I stepped forward.

Not a dramatic silence.

A heavy one.

The kind that makes even breathing feel loud.

My mother didn’t move her hand from Anna’s hair.

She just looked at me… like I was still her obedient son.

“You should go back to bed,” she said calmly.
“As if you didn’t see anything.”

Anna trembled harder.

Water still ran from the sink.
A broken plate lay near her feet.

I stared at my mother.

For the first time in my life… I didn’t look away.

“Let her go,” I said.

She smiled faintly.

“She’s weak. The baby is making her weak. I’m only teaching her—”

“I said let her go.”

My voice wasn’t loud.

That’s what made it dangerous.

Anna slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes were full of fear… but also something else.

Hope.

My mother finally released her grip—but only slightly.

Then she leaned in and whispered:

“If you choose her over me… you lose this family.”

That sentence should have scared me.

It didn’t.

It clarified everything.

I stepped closer and turned off the sink.

The sound stopped.

The house felt… dead quiet.

And I said the words that changed everything:

“Then this family ends tonight.”
