Chapter 9 - DANIEL ASKED FOR CUSTODY FROM JAIL
Daniel was arrested two days later on charges related to child endangerment, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and financial matters still under investigation.
His attorney immediately filed for temporary access to the children.
Not sole custody.
Supervised contact.
Grace opposed it.
I opposed it.
The court scheduled an emergency hearing.
Daniel appeared by video.
His lawyer argued.
“He is a father who made serious mistakes under financial pressure.”
My attorney answered.
“He participated in intentionally withholding prescribed treatment from an infant while creating records designed to portray the child’s mother as medically unstable.”
The judge reviewed Lily’s drawing.
The baby-monitor footage.
Dr. Sterling’s notes.
Margaret’s notebook.
Then Daniel’s lawyer made the argument I had feared.
“Megan’s emotional state should still be evaluated.”
I almost stood.
Grace touched the table.
“Stay.”
The attorney continued.
“She has experienced sleep deprivation.”
“Repeated checking behaviors.”
“Heightened medical anxiety.”
Grace rose.
“Because her child’s medicine was being replaced without her knowledge.”
Silence.
Then Dr. Sterling testified remotely.
“Megan’s concern was medically appropriate.”
“Her infant was seriously ill.”
“The prior description of her as overly anxious was influenced by information provided by Daniel before the visit.”
That sentence destroyed the narrative.
Then the judge asked me one question.
“Do you believe the children are safe with their father right now?”
“No.”
I did not elaborate.
I did not call Daniel evil.
Did not perform.
Just no.
The court ordered no unsupervised contact.
Independent guardianship review.
No trust access by Daniel.
No access by Margaret.
And temporary oversight by the bank named in my mother’s trust.
Daniel’s plan failed on the same mechanism he tried to exploit.
Independent oversight.
After the hearing, his attorney approached Grace.
Daniel wanted to negotiate.
“What does he offer?”
Grace asked.
“Information about Margaret.”
I laughed when she told me.
Margaret had already offered information about Daniel.
Mother and son were racing to become the lesser villain.
Then Detective Ruiz called.
They found another person involved.
Daniel’s business accountant.
Peter Sloan.
He had helped prepare financial forecasts assuming Daniel gained access to trust-supported household expenses.
One spreadsheet included a date.
Six weeks from now.
PROJECT RESET.
That was the bank deadline.
Everything had been timed to happen before it.
