Chapter 2 — The Empire Was Never His

Nathan's knees nearly gave out.
The words echoed inside his head like a judge's final verdict.
You never owned it.
"No..."
He grabbed the folder from Arthur Whitmore's hands before anyone could stop him.
"There has to be a mistake."
His fingers shook as he flipped through hundreds of pages.
Articles of incorporation.
Trust agreements.
Capital transfers.
Board resolutions.
Every signature.
Every acquisition.
Every expansion Blackwood Holdings had celebrated over the past three years.
Every dollar traced back to one source.
The Ashcroft Family Trust.
Nathan felt his mouth go dry.
"This... this can't be legal."
Arthur adjusted his glasses without the slightest hint of emotion.
"It has been reviewed by three federal courts and six independent auditors. Everything was structured before your marriage."
One by one, executives who had spent years flattering Nathan quietly stepped away from him.
The distance between them widened with every passing second.
Claire noticed.
Power always revealed people's true loyalties.
Bianca refused to believe what she was seeing.
She marched toward Claire, pointing an accusing finger.
"You forged these papers!"
Claire looked at her calmly.
"Do you really think one of the oldest financial families in America would need to forge anything?"
Bianca opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
At that moment, another group entered the ballroom.
This time it wasn't lawyers.
It was the Board of Directors.
Nathan recognized every face.
William Rhodes.
Elaine Foster.
Michael Chen.
People who had toasted him only an hour earlier.
William stepped forward.
"Mr. Blackwood."
Nathan looked relieved.
"Finally."
"Tell them this is insane."
William sighed heavily.
"I'm afraid we can't."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
William removed the gold company pin from his suit jacket.
"For three years, we followed Miss Ashcroft's instructions."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"Stop joking."
"No one gives orders except me."
Elaine lowered her eyes.
"Every decision you believed was yours had already been approved by Claire."
Nathan stared at Claire as though she had become a stranger.
"You let me think I was running the company."
"I did."
"Why?"
Claire's voice remained steady.
"Because I wanted to know whether you loved me without power."
Nathan's silence answered everything.
Arthur continued where she left off.
"Miss Ashcroft asked us to give you complete authority."
"Unlimited spending."
"Unlimited executive privileges."
"Unlimited public recognition."
"But there was one condition."
Nathan swallowed hard.
"What condition?"
Arthur met his eyes.
"If you ever abused your authority or violated the marital agreement, every delegated right would immediately return to the trust."
Nathan suddenly remembered.
A thick stack of documents he had signed before the wedding.
He had never read them.
His lawyer had laughed and said they were "routine family paperwork."
His heartbeat accelerated.
"No..."
Arthur slowly nodded.
"You signed every page."
The ballroom became eerily quiet.
Then a court officer approached Nathan once again.
"Mr. Blackwood."
"Your executive access has been revoked."
His company phone buzzed.
ACCESS DENIED
His tablet logged out automatically.
His security credentials disappeared.
His fingerprint no longer unlocked the corporate network.
Another notification appeared.
BOARD AUTHORITY: TERMINATED
Nathan looked up, panic finally replacing arrogance.
"You can't do this!"
Arthur didn't even blink.
"We already did."
Before Nathan could react, Bianca suddenly grabbed his arm.
"Nathan..."
Her voice trembled.
"My credit cards..."
She stared at her phone in horror.
"Every one of them has been declined."
Claire watched quietly.
She had once cried herself to sleep because Nathan forgot their anniversary.
Tonight—
She didn't feel a single tear.
Only peace.
May you like
Because the man who had slapped her in front of hundreds of people was finally learning the one lesson money could never buy.
Borrowed power always has an expiration date.
