Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden Inside the Bunny

Marcus knelt until he was eye level with the trembling little girl.
"It's okay," he whispered. "Nobody is going to yell at you anymore."
Amara didn't answer.
She only buried her face against his shoulder, clutching the faded stuffed bunny so tightly that her tiny knuckles turned white.
The living room remained painfully silent.
Danielle crossed her arms, forcing a laugh that sounded hollow.
"Marcus, don't encourage her. She's dramatic. She does this whenever she wants attention."
Marcus looked up.
For the first time in years, Danielle saw something in her husband's eyes that frightened her.
Disappointment.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Just disappointment.
He gently stroked Amara's hair.
"What happened?"
The girl sniffled.
"I... I broke the glass by accident."
"I said I was sorry."
"I cleaned it."
"I didn't mean to."
Danielle immediately interrupted.
"She lies."
Marcus held up one finger without looking at her.
"Let her finish."
The words struck Danielle harder than a slap.
Amara swallowed.
"Mom said... if Daddy knew... you'd stop loving me."
Marcus froze.
The room seemed to shrink around him.
"What?"
The little girl slowly held out her bunny.
"I hide things inside Bunny because Bunny never tells."
Marcus smiled sadly.
"May I see?"
She nodded.
The bunny had obviously been sewn and repaired dozens of times.
As Marcus carefully opened the tiny Velcro seam on its back, something slid into his palm.
Not toys.
Not candy.
Tiny folded papers.
Dozens of them.
Each one written in shaky seven-year-old handwriting.
He unfolded the first.
"Today Mommy said I ruined her life."
Another.
"I tried to be quiet but she said my breathing was annoying."
Another.
"Daddy smiled at me today. Mommy locked me in my room after he left."
Marcus felt every word like a knife.
There were over sixty notes.
One for almost every week of the past year.
At the very bottom lay a flash drive.
Danielle's face drained completely.
"No..."
Marcus looked up.
"What is this?"
Amara whispered,
"Nanny Grace gave it to me."
"She said... if she ever disappeared... I should give it to Daddy."
Danielle stumbled backward.
Grace had quit six months ago without explanation.
May you like
Or at least...
That was the story Danielle had told.
