Chapter 7 — The Plan to Destroy Sophia

For a few seconds after Daniel spoke, I couldn’t move.

The hospital hallway suddenly felt colder.

The sounds around me faded.

The footsteps of nurses.

The distant voices of doctors.

The machines beeping behind closed doors.

Everything disappeared except one sentence.

“Your mother had another target.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What was she planning to do?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Destroy Sophia’s reputation.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Eleanor knew she couldn’t simply take my home.

She knew she couldn’t legally remove Sophia.

So she created another battlefield.

Public opinion.

“She planned to make everyone believe Sophia was an unfit mother.”

Daniel continued.

“She prepared documents claiming Sophia had emotional problems after childbirth. She gathered messages taken out of context. She even contacted people in your social circle.”

My stomach turned.

“She was building a case.”

“Yes.”

“For custody.”

The word felt like a punch.

My son.

My wife.

My family.

They had tried to take everything.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There’s more.”

I already knew I wasn’t going to like what came next.

“What?”

“She had Audrey involved.”

I looked through the hospital window.

Sophia was sleeping beside Leo.

The woman who had been trapped.

The woman who had been silenced.

The woman they planned to blame.

“What did Audrey do?”

“She created fake messages.”

I froze.

“Fake messages?”

“She edited conversations between her and Sophia. She made it appear that Sophia was unstable and aggressive.”

My hands curled into fists.

Audrey had looked Sophia in the eyes every day.

She had watched her struggle.

And she still helped destroy her.

“How close were they to using it?”

Daniel answered immediately.

“They were waiting for you to return.”

“Why?”

“Because they wanted you to see Sophia as the problem.”

I understood.

The plan was simple.

When I came home, they wanted chaos.

A sick baby.

A frightened wife.

An angry family.

They wanted me confused.

They wanted me to believe their version before hearing Sophia’s.

But they made one mistake.

They underestimated how well I knew my wife.

The next morning, I sat beside Sophia after she woke up.

She immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?”

I didn’t hide it.

“Eleanor planned to take Leo from you.”

Her face went still.

For a moment, she didn’t react.

Then tears filled her eyes.

“She wanted everyone to think I was a bad mother.”

I nodded.

Sophia looked down at her hands.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“What do you mean?”

“She kept asking strange questions.”

“About what?”

“About my health. About my pregnancy. About whether I felt overwhelmed.”

My jaw tightened.

“She was collecting information.”

Sophia nodded slowly.

“She told me nobody would believe me if I spoke against her.”

I reached for her hand.

“But she was wrong.”

Sophia looked at me.

“Lucas…”

“She forgot something.”

“What?”

I looked at Leo sleeping peacefully.

“She forgot that the truth doesn’t need permission to exist.”

That afternoon, Daniel filed additional evidence with investigators.

The fake messages.

The false reports.

The financial records.

Everything.

The case against Eleanor and Audrey became stronger by the hour.

But there was still one problem.

Eleanor was refusing to admit anything.

She claimed she was the victim.

She told everyone she was a grandmother who had been “attacked by her own son.”

And somehow…

People were starting to believe her.

A local reporter appeared outside the courthouse.

The headline spread quickly.

“Military Officer Accuses His Own Mother of Family Betrayal.”

Eleanor had started a new battle.

A battle for sympathy.

And this time, she was fighting in public.

But she didn’t know something.

I had one final piece of evidence.

Something she thought disappeared forever.

Something that would prove exactly what happened inside that house.

The original nursery recording.

And on it…

Was the one thing Eleanor could never explain.
