Chapter 1: The Name That Silenced the Lobby

The man in the black suit didn’t look up immediately.
He stayed on one knee beside the woman on the marble floor, carefully adjusting his grip as if she were made of something far more fragile than flesh and bone. The lobby remained frozen—guests mid-breath, staff rigid behind the reception desk, even the shattered glass glittering like it had stopped time itself.
“Miss Permone… please forgive our late arrival,” he repeated, quieter this time.
The socialite in the white silk gown took a step back. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble, too loud in the unnatural silence. Her face, once twisted in arrogance, now struggled to find an expression that fit what she was seeing.
“Do you even know who I am?” she snapped, but her voice cracked halfway through.
The man finally lifted his gaze.
It wasn’t anger in his eyes.
It was recognition.
“I know exactly who you are,” he said calmly. Then he gently helped the woman in the wheelchair sit upright again. “And I know you’ve made a very expensive mistake.”
The socialite scoffed, forcing a laugh that didn’t land. “She’s nothing. Just some—”
“She is Dr. Evelyn Permone,” he interrupted.
The name didn’t mean anything to most guests.
But it meant everything to the security team that suddenly went pale behind the desk.
One of them whispered, “That’s… the Permone Foundation…”
The air changed.
The socialite’s confidence wavered. “Foundation? So what? Some charity case?”
The man stood now, fully revealing the insignia on his cuff: a discreet emblem of an international protection agency.
“Not charity,” he said. “Research. Medical breakthroughs. Spinal regeneration trials. Military-grade bioengineering applications.”
He paused.
“And she is the lead scientist.”

The silence that followed wasn’t empty.
It was collapsing.
