CHAPTER 1: THE CALL THAT SAVED TWO LIVES

Officer Daniel Torres did not wait for the ambulance before he moved.

He pressed two fingers against Emily Carter’s neck.

A pulse.

Weak.

Fast.

Still there.

“Emily,” he said firmly, keeping his voice low. “Stay with me.”

Her eyelids fluttered, but she did not wake.

Blood spread slowly across the white tile beneath her, thin and terrifying under the mall lights. Around them, shoppers stood frozen behind security guards, their phones still raised, recording the worst moment of someone else’s life.

Daniel looked at Emily’s swollen stomach.

Then at Marcus Kane.

Marcus stood ten feet away with his hands half-raised, breathing hard now, his perfect suit wrinkled, his cold control finally cracking.

“I didn’t touch her,” Marcus said.

Daniel stared at him.

Everyone had seen it.

Everyone had recorded it.

But men like Marcus Kane did not deny things because they believed they were innocent.

They denied things because they believed the world belonged to them.

“Cuff him,” Daniel ordered.

One security guard stepped forward.

Marcus smiled.

“You have no idea who you’re arresting.”

Daniel rose slowly.

“No,” he said. “You have no idea who you just attacked.”

The ambulance arrived three minutes later.

By then, Emily was barely conscious, whispering only one word over and over.

“My baby… my baby…”

Daniel rode in the ambulance with her because something about this case felt wrong.

Too public.

Too reckless.

Too desperate.

Marcus Kane was not a man who lost control in a mall unless he believed something bigger was about to destroy him.

At St. Mary’s Medical Center, doctors rushed Emily into emergency surgery.

Daniel stood outside the double doors with blood on his uniform and Emily’s handbag in his hands.

Inside the bag, her phone kept vibrating.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Unknown Number.

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

A distorted voice came through the line.

“Emily?”

Daniel said nothing.

The voice became sharper.

“Emily, listen carefully. Kane knows about the file. If he gets to your hospital room before federal agents arrive, you and the baby won’t survive the night.”

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then the voice said:

“Someone who helped build his empire.”

The line went dead.

Daniel looked down at Emily’s handbag.

Inside, hidden beneath a pack of tissues, he found a small black flash drive.

On it was one handwritten label.

KANE GLOBAL — REAL ACCOUNTS.

And beneath that, written in Emily’s shaking handwriting:

If anything happens to me, call my sister.

Daniel turned the card over.

The name made him freeze.
