Chapter 2: The Woman He Buried

The room felt smaller.

Heavier.

Like the walls had finally started listening.

Alexander’s voice came out low.

“Tell me your name.”

Clara hesitated.

“…Clara Hayes.”

The boy shook his head violently.

“No!” Oliver cried. “That’s Mommy!”

Clara knelt quickly, trying to calm him.

“Sweetheart, I’m not your mother,” she said gently. “I promise.”

But Oliver grabbed her wrist.

And froze.

The scar.

A thin, curved line near her pulse.

His tiny finger traced it.

“She has it,” he whispered.

Alexander’s face drained of color.

“That scar…” he said slowly. “Only one person had that scar.”

Clara stepped back instinctively.

“I don’t remember getting it,” she said. “I woke up two years ago in a hospital with no memory. They told me I had no family.”

Silence.

Then Alexander spoke again.

“Where?”

Clara swallowed.

“St. Mercy Hospital.”

The name hit him like a physical blow.

Because that hospital had reported one patient missing three years ago.

After a fire.

A fire that had destroyed half a wing.

Including the maternity recovery unit.

Including his wife.

Elena Whitmore.

Officially deceased.

Alexander stumbled back a step.

“No…” he whispered.

Oliver ran to Clara and hugged her leg tightly.

“Mommy came back,” he cried.

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

But she still shook her head.

“I don’t know you,” she whispered to the child. “I don’t remember you.”

Alexander stared at her.
