The missing section covered the two years before my father’s death.

A narrow compartment remained inside the back cover.
It held a small cassette recorder.
My grandfather’s voice emerged through static.
Arthur Sterling had recorded the message six months after Daniel’s death.
If Elena hears this, then Thomas has finally become careless.
I stopped the recording.
My grandfather had known.
