CHAPTER 1 — THE NAME SHE NEVER SAID

The cemetery stayed silent long after the words were spoken.

“He was his father.”

The young woman’s voice trembled, but she didn’t look away.

The grieving mother staggered back half a step.

The wind shifted through the gravestones like something alive.

For a moment, she couldn’t breathe.

Then—

“Say that again,” the older woman whispered.

The young woman lowered her gaze to the newborn, pressing the baby closer to her chest as if shielding a truth too heavy to expose.

“I didn’t come here to hurt you,” she said softly. “I came because he deserves to be near his father… even if he’s gone.”

The mother’s lips parted.

Gone.

That word hit harder than anything else.

Her son had died six months ago in a car crash.

No wife. No children. That’s what she was told.

That’s what she buried him believing.

Her eyes flicked to the baby again.

Something in that face…

Something impossible to ignore.

A detail she had seen before—years ago, in an old photograph her son once refused to explain.

Her hands started shaking.

May you like

“No…” she breathed. “That can’t be true.”

But even as she said it, doubt had already taken root.
