CHAPTER 14 THE HOUSEKEEPER’S TRUE NAME

THE HOUSEKEEPER’S TRUE NAME
Mrs. Bell’s real name was Sofia Reyes.
For twenty-seven years, she had lived inside Hartwell Mansion under a false identity.
She had watched Elena grow from a distance.
She had watched Nathaniel become the man Theodore Hart never deserved to raise.
And for six years, she had helped protect Lucas without revealing who she was.
Elena confronted her in the mansion’s small chapel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sofia’s hands trembled.
“Because Theodore’s men were still searching for us.”
“I believed you were safer without me.”
“You watched me work as a servant in the same house that stole my child.”
“I tried to help.”
“You let me believe my mother was dead.”
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was ashamed.”
“Of what?”
“Of leaving you.”
Elena shook her head.
“You did not leave me.”
“They forced you.”
“I still woke every morning knowing my daughter was growing up without me.”
Lucas entered the chapel and took Elena’s hand.
Sofia looked at him with unbearable tenderness.
“He has your courage.”
Elena’s anger softened but did not disappear.
“Did you know Vivienne was hurting him?”
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you stop her?”
“I collected evidence.”
“I sent the first files to Malcolm.”
“I placed the brass key where you would find it.”
Elena stared at her.
“You led me to the hidden room.”
Sofia nodded.
“I knew you were finally strong enough to expose them.”
Nathaniel entered carrying news from federal agents.
Vivienne’s car had been found near the airport.
The driver was dead.
Vivienne was gone.
For three weeks, no one saw her.
During that time, the Hart empire began collapsing.
The ledger exposed bribery, medical fraud, blackmail, and illegal genetic procedures involving dozens of wealthy families.
Senators resigned.
Doctors were arrested.
Executives vanished.
Hart Global’s board attempted to remove Nathaniel.
Then Theodore Hart’s original will was authenticated.
Because Lucas was biologically descended from Jonathan Hart, the inheritance conditions remained partially valid.
But Jonathan’s oldest living child was Elena.
She legally controlled fifty-one percent of Hart Global.
The maid Vivienne had slapped now owned the mansion, the company, and nearly everything Vivienne had tried to steal.
Elena’s first action was not to buy a dress or replace the servants.
She shut down Hart Global’s private medical division.
She created a fund for victims of fertility fraud.
She removed every executive connected to Senator Vale.
Then she announced that Nathaniel would remain chief executive.
Reporters demanded to know why.
Elena answered simply.
“Because a family is not built by blood alone.”
Nathaniel later found her in the nursery.
Lucas was asleep beneath the silver moon painted on the ceiling.
“You could remove me,” he said.
“I know.”
“You could sell everything.”
“I know.”
“Why are you keeping me here?”
Elena looked at him.
“Because Lucas loves you.”
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“And you?”
Elena’s breath caught.
Before she could answer, the nursery window shattered.
Nathaniel pulled her to the floor.
A bullet struck the wall above the crib.
Lucas woke screaming.
A phone began ringing on the table.
Nathaniel answered.
Vivienne’s voice whispered through the speaker.
“You took my house.”
“You took my name.”
“Now I am going to take the one thing neither of you can replace.”
Nathaniel looked at the empty crib.
May you like
The blankets had been arranged around a doll.
Lucas was no longer in the room.
