CHAPTER 6 THE MATRIARCH RETURNS

THE MATRIARCH RETURNS
Eleanor Hart arrived before dawn.
She stepped from a black sedan wearing a cream coat and pearl earrings.
At seventy-two, she still carried herself with the disciplined elegance of a woman who had spent decades controlling powerful men without ever raising her voice.
Nathaniel waited for her in the library.
Vivienne sat beneath guard near the fireplace.
Elena remained beside Lucas on the sofa.
The child had refused to leave her.
Eleanor entered and surveyed the room.
Her gaze paused on Elena.
For the first time, the Hart matriarch lost her composure.
“You.”
Elena stood.
“You remember me.”
Eleanor removed her gloves.
“I remember a frightened young woman who made a terrible mistake.”
“My mistake was trusting this family.”
Nathaniel closed the library doors.
“Daniel Kessler named you.”
Eleanor looked at him calmly.
“A dying criminal will say anything.”
“He is still alive.”
“Then perhaps he can explain himself.”
Nathaniel placed the black ledger on the desk.
Eleanor’s eyes flickered.
That was enough.
“You knew about the false surrogate identity,” Nathaniel said.
“I protected you.”
“From what?”
“Scandal.”
Elena stared at her.
“You purchased my silence.”
“I offered you a better life.”
“You threatened my baby.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Lucas was not your baby.”
“I carried him for nine months.”
“You were compensated.”
Nathaniel slammed his hand against the desk.
“She was reported dead.”
Eleanor turned toward him.
“Because Vivienne could not become his legal mother while the carrier remained emotionally attached.”
“She was not only emotionally attached,” Elena said.
Eleanor glanced at Lucas.
The boy’s fingers tightened around Elena’s hand.
Nathaniel noticed.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Eleanor remained silent.
Vivienne suddenly began laughing.
It was quiet at first.
Then it grew louder.
She leaned back in her chair and looked at Eleanor with open contempt.
“You should tell him.”
Eleanor’s jaw tightened.
Vivienne smiled at Nathaniel.
“Your mother did not choose Elena merely because she was healthy.”
Nathaniel looked between the women.
“Choose her for what?”
“The clinic needed an egg donor after mine failed.”
Nathaniel felt the room tilt.
He looked at Elena.
She was crying silently.
“No,” he whispered.
Elena nodded.
“They told me I was carrying an embryo created from you and Vivienne.”
“I believed I was only a gestational surrogate.”
Nathaniel could barely speak.
“What happened?”
“After Lucas was born, a nurse showed me the laboratory report.”
“My egg had been used.”
Nathaniel turned to his mother.
“You knew?”
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“The family needed an heir.”
“Vivienne’s medical condition made that impossible.”
“Why Elena?”
Eleanor looked toward the old portrait of Theodore Hart.
“Because she was suitable.”
Elena’s voice became sharp.
“Tell him the rest.”
Eleanor refused.
Elena stepped closer.
“My mother worked in this mansion.”
Nathaniel stared at her.
“She was a maid here twenty-seven years ago.”
Eleanor’s face went white.
Elena removed an old photograph from her pocket.
It showed a young Theodore Hart standing beside a smiling housemaid.
The woman held a newborn baby.
Elena pointed at the infant.
“That baby was me.”
Nathaniel stared at his father.
Then at Elena.
His horror deepened.
“You’re saying my father was your father?”
“No,” Eleanor whispered.
Her voice finally cracked.
Elena looked at Nathaniel with tears streaming down her face.
May you like
“I’m saying Theodore Hart raised you.”
“But he was not your biological father.”
