Chapter 2: The Silence That Followed

No one answered Hannah’s question.

Lucas felt something inside him crack—not loudly, not dramatically, but in a slow, unbearable way, like glass under steady pressure.

“Are we in trouble for waiting?”

The words hung in the air of the penthouse kitchen, surrounded by warmth, food, and a kind of safety the girls clearly didn’t trust yet.

Emma was the first to move. She reached for Hannah’s hand under the table.

“No,” Emma said quietly. “We’re not in trouble.”

But her voice didn’t sound like belief. It sounded like survival.

Lucas knelt slowly, so he wasn’t towering over them.

“No one is in trouble,” he said. “Not you. Not any of you.”

Rose frowned. “That’s what adults say before they send you away.”

That sentence landed harder than anything Lucas had heard in years.

He glanced at Daniel. The driver looked uncomfortable, like he had stepped into something too fragile to touch.

Lucas made a decision.

Not business. Not charity.

Something else.

“Listen to me,” Lucas said gently. “You’re staying here tonight. All four of you. Together. No one is separating you.”

Emma studied him again, that same cautious calculation in her eyes.

“And tomorrow?” she asked.

Lucas hesitated.

For the first time in his life, he didn’t have a prepared answer.

“Tomorrow,” he said slowly, “I will make sure you are safe. I promise I won’t disappear.”

That was the only promise he could make without lying.

Lily clutched her cup tighter. “People always disappear.”

Lucas didn’t argue.

Because she was right.

Instead, he said, “Not tonight.”

And for the first time, the girls didn’t protest when Daniel showed them to the guest rooms.

Not trust.

May you like

But exhaustion.

That was enough for now.
