Chapter 2 – The Hidden Truth

Daniel barely blinked as the first video played.
The timestamp showed exactly 6:17 a.m., one hundred and twelve days earlier.
Vanessa walked into Margaret's bedroom carrying a breakfast tray. She smiled until the door closed.
Then her entire expression changed.
"You've lived long enough," she muttered, dumping the oatmeal into the trash before placing only a glass of water on the bedside table.
Margaret looked confused.
"I... I'm hungry."
"You'll eat when I say you can."
Daniel's hands tightened into fists.
The next clips became even worse.
Vanessa regularly left his mother locked inside her room for twelve or fourteen hours. She disconnected the emergency call button. She hid medications, then blamed Margaret whenever nurses questioned missed doses.
But another face kept appearing.
Greg.
Daniel's younger cousin.
The same cousin who had recently begun asking strange questions about Daniel's investments, insurance policies, and inheritance.
Greg visited almost every afternoon while Daniel was thousands of miles away.
The recordings captured secret conversations.
"Once she signs the updated power of attorney," Greg whispered, "everything moves much faster."
Vanessa smiled.
"And Daniel?"
Greg laughed.
"He trusts you. By the time he comes home, the house will already belong to us."
Daniel immediately searched for any document filed during his absence.
His attorney confirmed that someone had attempted to submit forged legal paperwork transferring authority over Margaret's finances to Vanessa.
Fortunately, the bank had delayed approval because Daniel's overseas biometric verification had never been completed.
The fraud had nearly succeeded.
Then another recording appeared.
Late one evening, Elena quietly entered Margaret's room carrying food she had secretly prepared after Vanessa went to bed.
"I know you're hungry," Elena whispered.
Margaret burst into tears.
"My son thinks I'm safe."
"I promise," Elena answered softly. "I'll protect you until he comes home."
Daniel paused the video.
For the first time since arriving home, tears rolled down his face.
Elena had risked everything without expecting anything in return.
He continued watching.
Two weeks before his return, Vanessa discovered Elena sneaking food into the room.
She slapped Elena so hard she crashed into the dresser.
"You work for me," Vanessa screamed.
"No," Elena answered through tears.
"I work for your husband."
That single sentence explained why Vanessa hated her.
Elena had never been loyal to Vanessa.
She had remained loyal to Daniel and his mother from the very beginning.
By sunrise, Daniel copied every recording onto encrypted drives and delivered them directly to Detective Laura Mitchell.
"This isn't just abuse," Laura said after reviewing several clips.
"It's conspiracy, fraud, elder neglect... and attempted financial exploitation."
May you like
Daniel nodded.
"And we're only getting started."
